Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) is excited to see local growth reflected in state-level data indicators. Each year, the California State Department of Education releases the California School Dashboard. First introduced in 2017, this online tool provides information about the performance of schools and districts across the state. It uses a color-coded system to indicate performance levels on various measures.

Compared to last year's data, current districtwide data (reflects the 2023-24 student data) shows that NMUSD has successfully impacted and lowered chronic absenteeism and student behavior issues as measured by suspension rates. A strong partnership with staff, families, and students has led to these significant improvements. NMUSD students also have maintained progress in English language arts and mathematics achievement. A system-wide focus on these efforts has resulted in stronger foundations for academic student achievement and excellence.

“This data signifies more than just numbers; it reflects the collective dedication of our students, staff, and families to foster academic achievement, engagement, and overall well-being,” said Assistant Superintendent of Achievement Socorro Shiels. The district dashboard is an aggregate across all schools. Each school also has an individual dashboard that shows school-specific achievement and gains. At the same time, while the district takes pride in the results that show improvement, academic excellence for all continues to be the target.

With a high graduation rate of 93%, NMUSD continues to prepare students for success beyond high school. “This rate reflects our commitment to equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue post-secondary opportunities, whether in college, career training, or the workforce," said Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Kerrie Torres. The district is carefully unpacking what support structures are in place to ensure that every student thrives after graduation and has a full range of options to succeed while in school.

NMUSD has high expectations and makes meaningful strides toward ensuring all students reach their full potential. Academic rigor and high levels of achievement for all students continue to be the most crucial goals for the school district. By ensuring belonging in our school communities and keeping students safe in learning environments that ensure they are seen, heard, supported, and safe, the district is confident that each student's abilities will be able to shine.
