School Construction Update

Updated 2/13/2020

As part of Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s (NMUSD) ongoing physical security and safety enhancements, we would like to inform you of upcoming construction at Corona del Mar Middle/High School and Ensign Intermediate School.

Corona del Mar (CdM) Middle and High School:

CdM School Frint

Beginning the week of February 17, 2020 construction will begin to replace the existing six-foot chain-link along Mar Vista Drive and Vista Del Oro with a new, permanent eight-foot chain-link fence. Trees along this section will also be removed, however they will be replaced upon completion of construction.

Additional enhancements expected to begin construction this summer include and will be completed by the start of the 2020/2021 school year, include:

  • Installation of permanent fencing along the perimeter of the school.

    • Some sections will continue to be chain link fencing, while other sections (front entrance to the high school, student parking lot - adjacent to the pool and Learning Resource Center (LRC), and parts of the fencing near the baseball field/middle school entrance) will have ornamental fencing.

  • Construction of new sidewalks throughout the campus to allow for pedestrian traffic within the interior and exterior of fence perimeter.

  • Reconfiguration of the school bus pick-up/drop-off along Mar Vista Drive to allow construction of additional sidewalks.

  • Reconfiguration of the student parking lot near the pool and LRC for accessibility enhancements.

  • Construction of a new entry structure at the athletic entrance adjacent to the pool and LRC.

It is anticipated that existing walkways and access to school parking lots will not be impacted during the school year.

The project includes a variety of construction upgrades, including replacement of temporary fencing with permanent fencing, additional parking lots, reconfiguration of existing parking lot, and remodel of the front office to improve visibility and access. Construction will begin the week of February 17, 2020. It is anticipated that existing walkways and the current school parking lot will not be impacted during the school year.

Project Overview:

  • Construction of a new pick-up/drop-off lot at the front of the school. This front lot, as some have called the “banana lot”, includes a one-way drop-off/pick-up lane which minimizes traffic congestion on City streets, and approximately 20 parking spaces.

  • Construction of an additional parking lot will along Irvine Avenue to accommodate approximately 45 parking spaces.

As part of the project, several trees will be removed to accommodate construction, some trees will remain and additional trees will be planted throughout the school.

Reconstruction of the existing parking lot and front office remodel will not begin until the summer, with all construction expected to be complete by the start of the 2020/2021 school year.
